meet janie pinney
I grew up in a small town in eastern North Carolina. My friends and I were often steered to and found creative outlets for entertainment. My love for art started there where I took painting classes which quickly became a favorite way to explore and expand my world. As years passed my personal and profession passions began to weave together and remained in the arts with my education and career that included a focus in art history, arts management, advertising, decorative painting and studio art.
As my three girls grew older, I found more time to paint. Classes and workshops continue to serve as sources of learning and experimentation and always leave me with great respect for the talent of other artists and a desire to push myself further. I try to always remain open to as an artist. Being willing to step out of my own comfort zone is a necessity and I believe that through embracing vulnerability, we grow and find moments of curiosity and connection. Developing an appreciation of being in the moment and losing track of time while painting is a welcome gift.
If I had to label my current painting style, I would say that I am a colorist. Color is often the first catalyst which drives me in the beginning of a painting, and the rest tends to fall in line. I find daily inspiration from people, images, experiences, and nature. My recent focus has an abstract approach with periodic floral and botanical references. Oils are my preferred medium, but I also like to experiment with different forms of mixed media to create layers, texture, and depth.
My wish is that my pieces evoke a sense of serenity with an appreciation and nod to the abundant beauty that surrounds us. I am drawn and inspired by how art embodies and is a reflection of all cultures and serves as a incentive for understanding many aspects of human existence and experience.
I live in Richmond, Virginia and am beyond fortunate to have a wonderful husband and three daughters who I adore. They continue to give me encouragement and are my pride and joy.

commissions + creating & collecting art
Art is more than a pretty picture. With each piece, I have a mental image of how I want the composition to look and feel and in turn the finished piece may provide a connection to the person viewing it.
In my two decades of painting, I have been fortunate to work with exceptional art consultants, galleries, interior designers, and individual collectors. If you fall in love with one of my paintings and it is no longer available, or you want something specific; you may want to consider commissioning a painting.
Images of your space, color schemes, and references to any of my past work are welcome to help guide me through the process. While I will not exactly replicate an existing piece, I will strive to create a work of art that you will love and enjoy. Turn around is usually 4 to 5 weeks. Please contact me to discuss ideas, sizes and pricing.
